Chiyo and Sakaguchi end wait for gold in Budapest

 
Budapest, Hungary, August 11, 2019 – Chiyo Suzuki and Yurika Sakaguchi won their first FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour gold medal when they topped the podium at the Budapest 1-Star on Sunday.


The Japanese pair were chasing their fifth World Tour medal of 2019, having won one silver and three bronze, but they ended their wait for gold when they defeated Russia’s Daria Mastikova and Polina Tsyganova 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-8). 

For the Russians silver was their first World Tour medal in their first World Tour tournament together.


The Hungarian capital hosted a World Tour tournament for the first time, and it took place in a 1,000-seater arena at Lupa Beach which is located 20 minutes from the centre of Budapest. The winning teams in Budapest collected the €1,000 first-place prizes and claimed 200 Tokyo 2020 Olympic points.

Emi van Driel and Raïsa Schoon won their third World Tour medal of 2019 when they defeated Chiara They and Claudia Scampoli in the bronze medal match. 

The Dutch duo won 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) to add Budapest bronze to gold in Gothenburg and Alba Adriatica.
