Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh and Wang lead way into Vizag Open main draw

 
Visakhapatnam, India, February 28, 2019 – Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Ya-Jen and Wang Chin-Ju led the way from qualifying to the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Vizag Open men’s main draw tournament with a straight-set win on Thursday.



The Chinese Taipei duo claimed their spot in the main draw by beating Ukraine’s Anton Didyk and Sviatoslav Karvatskyi 2-0 (21-16, 21-19), but their compatriots Hsu Chen-Wei and Wu Shin-Shian did not make it through after dropping their match against Japan’s Kensuke Shoji and Masato Kurasaka 2-0 (21-16, 21-12).

Denmark’s Mads Rosager and Jacob Stein Brinck won their only match in qualification 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) against Scandinavian neighbours Hans Erik Dybfest and Ruben Olai Lund Lovli of Norway, while South Africa’s Grant Goldschmidt and Leo Williams claimed the remaining main draw spot with a 2-0 (24-22, 21-18) win over India’s Pennumuch Krishna Chaitanya and Kambala Rajesh.



In the women’s tournament, South Africans Simone Sittig and Luciana Pierangeli’s maturity came into play as they overcame opening day jitters with a 2-1 (8-21, 21-10, 15-6) win over their rookie opponents India’s Aarthi Lakshmi and Sabatha Sabatha of India to advance to the next round.

Three United States pairs played in qualification, but only two made it to the main draw. Audrey and Nicole Nourse were pitted against Phnom Penh 2-star silver medallist Corinne Quiggle and her partner Cassie House. The Nourse sisters prevailed 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-12) over their compatriots Quiggle and House, followed by the 2-0 (21-11, 21-13) triumph of Tanna Aljoe and Melissa Fuchs over Malaysia’s Tasha Mae and Sun Woon Joo.

Russia’s Ekaterina Filina and Ekaterina Zhazhigina completed the main draw cast with a 2-0 (21-6, 21-10) win over India’s K. Lavanya Lavanya and C.H. Rajitha Rajitha.
