Mol & Sorum net seventh World Tour title this season at Vienna Major

Vienna, Austria, August 4, 2019 - Anders Mol and Christian Sorum successfully defended their A1 Major Vienna title here Sunday afternoon to secure the Norwegians' seventh FIVB World Tour gold medal this season with a podium-topping victory over Alison Cerutti and Alvaro Filho of Brazil.

With their 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) triumph in 38 minutes over the fifth-seeded Alison and Alvaro, the top-seeded Mol and Sorum are now tied for second all-time for most wins in a single season by a men's team on the international beach volleyball circuit that started in 1987.

Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers hold the record for wins in a single season with nine podium-topping performances in 2010 as the pair never finished lower than fourth with 11 overall medals in 12 FIVB World Tour appearances.

All the teams that are tied with Mol and Sorum for the second spot are from Brazil with Roberto Lopes/Franco Neto initially establishing the single season best in 1995 with seven gold medal finishes. Jose Loiola and Emanuel Rego tied the mark in 1999. Emanuel and Ricardo Santos became the third team to win seven gold medals in a season in both the 2004 and 2007 seasons.

Mol and Sorum will have an opportunity to break the tie with the three Brazilian pairs as the Norwegians are scheduled to compete September 4-8 at the FIVB World Tour Finals in Rome, Italy.

“Just naming those names is giving me goosebumps,” Sorum said. “It’s special to be a part of this amazing sport.”

The Norwegian has now won 61 of 65 matches (94%) this season with a current winning streak of 20.
