Grabovskyy and Wheelan clinch semifinal berth at Vizag Open

 
Visakhapatnam, India, March 2, 2019 – Canada’s Sergiy Grabovskyy and Cameron Wheelan triumphed in Saturday’s second round of pool play and the quarterfinals to punch their tickets to the semifinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Vizag Open.



The third-seeded Grabovskyy and Wheelan opened with a 2-1 (12-21, 25-23, 15-7) win over Germany’s Armin Dollinger and Simon Kulzer in Pool C before eliminating Japan’s Kensuke Shoji and Masato Kurasaka in the quarterfinal round with a tight 2-0 (24-22, 23-21) win.

After their loss to the Canadians in pool play, Dollinger and Kulzer regained their composure to win their next two matches against Slovenia’s Danijel Pokersnik and Gasper Plahutnik 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) in the Round of 12 and Canada’s Jake MacNeil and William Hoey 2-0 (21-8, 21-19) in the quarterfinals.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Ya-Jen and Wang Chin-Ju defeated South Africa’s Grant Goldschmidt and Leo Williams 2-0 (21-17, 25-23), while Japan’s Hitoshi Murakami and Takashi Tsuchiya won by default over Denmark’s Mads Rosager and Jacob Stein Brinck.

The men’s semifinals will be played at 10.00 and 11.00 local time on Sunday, March 3.
