Alison and Alvaro Filho cruise into semifinals at Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, May 3, 2019 – Brazilian pair Alison Cerutti and Alvaro Filho booked a place in the semifinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Port Dickson Beach Open with two wins on Friday.

The second-seeded Brazilians secured a 2-0 (21-16, 21-12) victory over Turkish duo Murat Giginoglu and Volkan Gogtepe in the quarterfinals to make their first World Tour final four as partners.

“I think the key to this win was good communication,” Alvaro Filho said. “Alison and I kept communicating in each game situation and we did it step by step until we got the (winning) result.

“We just want to enjoy this moment. We had two victories today so we just want to enjoy it first. Tomorrow is another day and we will take it one step at a time.”

The pair teamed-up only this season and first saw action at the Xiamen 4-star last week, finishing ninth overall.

Earlier, they sparked a late run to snatch the win in the tiebreaker against Australia’s Christopher McHugh and Zachery Schubert 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-12) in the second round.

In other matches, the United States' John Hyden and Ryan Doherty prevailed against Germany’s Nils Ehlers and Lars Fluggen in the tough tie-break matchup 2-1 (16-21, 23-21, 15-11), while their compatriots Brunner and Priddy advanced to the final four for the first time with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-15) win over Slovenia’s Nejc Zemljak and Jan Pokersnik.

“It was all my partner,” said Hyden on his partner Doherty who played an excellent game against the Germans. “He got served 99 per cent of the balls and he came through. It’s not easy for anybody, let alone a big guy, to be blocking and serving in this heat.

“We put a little game plan together halfway through the second set and were able to pick up some balls on defence. We made a couple of touches on the block so that I could put set the ball up. That was kind of the game we played and we just outplayed them through exhaustion.”

In the all-German duel, Alexander Walkenhorst and Sven Winter outplayed third seeds Philipp Arne Bergmann and Yannick Harms 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) to make it to their second World Tour final four.
