Piersma and Ypma win gold in Vaduz

 
Vaduz, Liechtenstein, August 11, 2019 – The Netherlands’ Emma Piersma and Pleun Ypma ended the unbeaten run of Japanese second seeds Kaho Sakaguchi and Reika Murakami to win gold in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Vaduz 1-star on Sunday.



Piersma and Ypma started with an upset of Japanese top seeds Sayaka Mizoe and Suzuka Hashimoto in a three-setter (21-18, 21-23, 15-12) in the semifinals before putting on a much stronger performance against Kaho and Reika to win 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) in the gold medal match.

The Vaduz gold medallists dropped their match against their third-seeded compatriots Julia Wouters and Katja Stam in the pool play round before they started their winning run in the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, Mizoe and Hashimoto got back on track with a bronze medal win by forfeit by Wouters and Stam, who were defeated in the semifinals by Kaho and Reika in the nail-biting tiebreaker (21-17, 17-21, 16-14).
