Top three seeds advance to Vizag Open women’s quarterfinals

 
Visakhapatnam, India, March 1, 2019 – The top three seeded teams in the women’s main draw tournament secured their places in the quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Vizag Open on Friday.



Japan’s Chiyo Suzuki and Yurika Sakaguchi, the Czech Republic’s Martina Bonnerova and Martina Maixnerova and Austria’s Nadine and Teresa Strauss recorded two victories each to move to the next round.

In Pool A, Phnom Penh 1-star winners Suzuki and Sakaguchi made short work of their opponents Christie Dias and Steffi Fernandez of India 2-0 (21-6, 21-5) in their first match then completed their day’s work with a straight-set (21-17, 21-10) win against Denmark’s Helle Sondergard and Simone Marie Okholm Hansen.

Bonnerova and Maixnerova also faced an Indian team in their first match in Pool B. The Czech duo had an easy start with a 2-0 (21-3, 21-8) win, followed by a tougher encounter with Israel’s Sofia Starikov and Anita Dave, whom they managed to beat in three sets (16-21, 21-15, 15-10).

The Strauss sisters reigned in Pool C after beating the other sister tandem in the tournament – Audrey and Nicole Nourse of the United States 2-0 (21-13, 21-15), and Satono Ishitsubo and Asami Shiba of Japan 2-1 (22-20, 21-23, 16-14).

The duo from Vanuatu also secured a quarterfinal spot by outplaying their rivals Ekaterina Filina and Ekaterina Zhazhigina of Russia 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) and Perumal Yogeshwari and Gopi Jenifer 2-0 (21-8, 21-8) in Pool D.
