News 22/09/2019 China and USA extend win streaks to six in Women’s World Cup Sapporo and Toyama, Japan, September 22, 2019 – China and the United States fought hard in five-setters to extend their respective winning streaks to six on Sunday, preparing themselves for a showdown on Monday for the solo lead in the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup.In Sapporo, captain Zhu Ting and Yuan Xinyue both scored 26 points to lead their squad to a 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9) win over Brazil.Zhu helped out with 19 kills and played excellent net defence with seven blocks, while Yuan played solidly from the middle with 25 attacks and a block.China opened the match with a set win, but Brazil countered with the same set-score victory to tie the match at 1-1. Brazil benefitted down the final stretch of the third set from back-to-back service aces that gave them a 2-1 set lead, but China recovered from the setback and forced a tiebreaker. As Zhu and Yuan dominated on offence, the other Chinese players gained confidence to mount a bigger lead until they concluded the set and match.“In each match, there is a role that each one of us has to play,” Yuan said. “I am a middle blocker and I try to give my best whenever the ball comes my way. It’s good that we can show our strength and strong points in each position. In today’s match, each one of us showed our strong points.”USA endured the host team’s tough challenge to post a 3-2 (26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8) victory, giving them a chance to celebrate maintaining their win-record in the tournament.Michelle Bartsch-Hackley led all scorers with 30 markers, including 26 attacks, three blocks and a service winner, with four other players giving their squad firepower as they all scored in double figures. On the other side, young player Mayu Ishikawa showed a lot of promise as a starter as she recorded 23 points, and then Yuki Ishii helped out with 21 markers.Meanwhile, Russia are third in the team standing with five victories and a loss after registering a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-16) win over world and European champions Serbia.“Some of Serbia’s top players are not in this tournament but the players here are all vying to get in the first team and they are very good,” Russia coach Sergio Busato said. “For me, Serbia is the top team in the world. The proof is not in my saying it, the proof is in their results.”In other matches, the Dominican Republic earned their third victory after completing a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) win over Kenya in Sapporo, while Korea also picked up their third victory in the tournament following their 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 25-9) triumph against Argentina in Toyama.The Netherlands got back on the winning track after two consecutive losses to the USA and Serbia in Hamamatsu in the previous round.
