FIVB World Tour returns to Canada

Edmonton, Canada, November 1, 2019 - For the first-time in three seasons, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will return to Canada as Edmonton hosts the planet's elite beach volleyball from July 17-21 in the capital city of the Canadian province of Alberta.

Situated on the North Saskatchewan River in the western part of the North American country, Edmonton is the fourth Canadian city to host an FIVB World Tour event along with Montreal (2002, 2005-2007), Quebec (2011) and Toronto (1998-2000, 2016).

Teams from beach volleyball power Brazil have captured 12 gold medals, including seven men and five women titles. American tandems have posted four podium-topping finishes, including one man’s and three women's crowns.

Five teams with Olympic gold medals have also topped Canadian podiums, including 2016 Rio Summer Games winners Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil and Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst of Germany at the 2016 FIVB World Tour Finals in Toronto.

The best placement by Canadian teams in FIVB World Tour events in the North American country were men's second by Olympians John Child/Mark Heese in 2000 at Toronto and 2002 at Montreal.

The top finish by a Canadian women's team on home sand were sevenths by Marie-Andree Lessard/Sarah Maxwell in 2005 in Montreal and Heather Bansley/Elizabeth Maloney in 2011 at Quebec.
